sunshine jen: Reading Ulysses Project
Recently, I saw the movie, Julie & Julia, about a woman who sets out to cook all of the recipes in a Julia Child cookbook in a year and blogs about it. Even though it was a dumbass movie (all they do is cook!), it did get me thinking about a project I’ve always wanted to do.
I’ve always wanted to read Ulysses all the way through. I’ve read bits (okay the dirty bits) of it, but I’ve never read the whole shebang. As I stared at the book taunting me on my book shelf, I decided that now was a good time to do it. My hiking buddy suggested I call my project Jenny & Jimmy.
I’m ready. I have two copies of Ulysses and my own mental Dublin map. I’ve always had a good memory for spaces, so I might as well use my Dublin map. I can still walk around sections of Sydney, Australia in my head, and I haven’t been there in nearly eight years. Can it be eight years? Wow.
Even though I usually keep my reading habits quiet, I’ve decided to be public about Ulysses in order to get as much encouragement and positive vibes as I can. Don’t worry, I’m not going to blog about it every single day because quite frankly, that’s a bit obnoxious. Still, from time to time, I will let you all know how it’s going.
I plan to start the project tomorrow, January 13th, which is the 69th anniversary of Joyce’s death. My goal is to have the book finished by June 16th which is Bloomsday (aka the day in the book); however, if I get really ambitious and life doesn’t get in the way, I could finish by April 13th which is Samuel Beckett’s birthday and would be three months exactly.
This time last year, I was reading the Twilight saga.
This morning, I finished Portrait of An Artist as a Young Man (which I've read many times), so bring on the big boy. Let’s dance.
