Cootie Girl: Performance art OR Crap?
11.20.2002
"Sounds Good
Looks Good
Feels Good Too ....
You don't need to
Emerge from
Nothing!"
- Fischerspooner
OK I went to this show last night at Irving Plaza. The band if you want to call them that is Fischerspooner. No instruments, lots of glitter, one lead singer, Robert Palmer dancers (in nothing but black bras and panties), 2 back up singers, a guy that spit chocolate sauce onto the audience, 2 guest singers (one very pregnant or so they wanted you to think), a backdrop of strange videos and the use of confetti cannons. What more can this one-hour show pack in? How about seven costume changes only to end the show in sequence bikini briefs. YUM! This was by far, hands down, the best show I have been to in a long time. It was TOO FUCKING FUNNY! Everyone on stage had hands free mics so they can do their effortless robot moves while they lip-synced all the songs. After crowd surfing, Casey Spooner (lead singer) even announced that he lost his mic clip, but it didn't matter "since I don't use the mic anyway". They even had to stop the show once because the tape stopped mid-song.
The crowd at this show freaked me out just a little bit. Many were in the 30+ age group and I spotted some older men in eyeliner. Is that coming back? Two nights in one week with men in eyeliner. I am beginning to worry. Oh, I also spotted two Rolling Stone writers, I would be curious to see what they say about the show.
So yeah Fischerspooner, interesting bunch. I think their "stick" is that this is performance art so it really doesn't matter if they can actually sing or play instruments. Does that make it all right? The gear they were selling included t-shirts that said, "sounds good, looks good, feels good too" and "artist have more fun." I guess robot dancing in sequence outfits makes you an artist and yes then you would have more fun. In fact, I am going to be an artist later tonight who wants to join me?
Oh and Michele I saw 4 mesh hats. They are still not "HOT."
