Cootie Girl: Moz-man
5.7.2004
I went to see Morrissey tonight at the Apollo here in NYC. You heard me right - Morrissey at the Apollo. And surprisingly enough the Moz-man put on a damn good show. People asked, "Do you think he will rub the log before the show?" Only you die hard Showtime at the Apollo fans would know what they are talking about - I'll admit I didn't know what that meant until my friend Sean told me (it's not really a log but a tree of hope). For years I watched Showtime at the Apollo (well actually feel asleep during SNL and woke up during S.a.t.A.) and TeeVee really does make things look bigger. The Apollo is tiny. I think it might have about 1,200 seats total and that is over 3 floors.
I really wasn't expecting much from the show since after 20 years I thought he might not have the voice he once had (I mean I have seen all those bands reunited shows - some of those 80's bands didn't sound too good). Morrissey, to my surprise, sounded GREAT and his band ROCKED. Here are a few other observations I had from the show:
1. Morrissey wore a jacket with a button down shirt and jeans. He had a tie on only it wasn't tied around his neck but rather hanging out of his pants zipper like a long tongue. (I was just wondering how many men will go to work with their ties hanging out of their zippers. Anyone?)
2. the drummer was HOT
3. the crowd wasn't annoyingly young but in fact 30 something's who actually might have seen Moz-man when he was with the Smiths.
4. security at the Apollo was tight - I got the most action I have seen in months from the guard that felt me up (I swear I got the full on breast grab like Molly Ringwald did in 16 Candles)
5. the guys that sat next to me tried to smoke some really bad pot (or was it something else) anyway they almost set the chair on fire. Oh and towards the end of the show they were giving each other hand jobs but was trying to hide it (I kid you not)
6. the guy that was to my left in the isle dancing - I think he was wearing a members only jacket - he looked like he is 45+ years old (but I have a feeling he was mid 30's) and sort of looked like Wilford Brimley - you should have seen him dancing he was REALLY into the show.
7. Parker Posey was at the show. I think she was with Michael Panes, the other people I was with said her boyfriend Ryan Adams was with them too but I didn't see him.
8. Morrissey can still ROCK but he really should leave his shirt on ... that or stop running off the stage like a frightened girl every time he took it off .... He went through 3 shirts tossing 2 of them into the audience ... all I could think of was - that would be up on Ebay if I caught it.
9. Morrissey's hair is cut very much like my dad's (you know in that 50's/60's rockabilly/teddy boy/greaser look) but his face is sort of reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino.
10. I'm surprised that I can actually admit to liking the show - you know after following The Cure for 20 years I would never admit to liking Morrissey or The Smiths. True Cure fans never did that. Have I become an adult? Probably not.
11. OH and did I say the drummer was HOT
I'll leave you with one of my favorite Smith songs ....
"Take me out tonight
Oh, take me anywhere, I don't care
I don't care, I don't care
Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
Because I haven't got one, da ...Oh, I haven't got one
And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine"
-The Smiths (There Is A Light That Never Goes Out)
