Cootie Girl: support CBGBs, wear a thong and drink Corona's
7.10.2005
That was the message from Colin Abrahall - front man for the band GBH. A band that back in 1985 I had mad mad love for and who on Friday night blew my mind. I never had the chance to see them live back in the day when they were the hot new punk band but I am pretty sure the show would have been the same. Colin who is 42 now (so he says) still danced around the stage like a teenager and had some hilarious commentary between songs. The message was clear "fucking support CBGBs man it's like more important than the fucking statue of liberty" and "you know if you wore a thong you would get more male attention, I'm wearing one" and lets not forget "never get your drummer sponsored by Corona - they'll never last a full show, support CBGBs" ...
I don't really know anybody that listened to punk (at least the punk bands I did) so I asked Tricia and Michele to accompany me to the show as I figured they would come to like them like I do. (But really, I got them to go because the show was listed as an 18+ show so I told them there would be loads of young boy there.) The crowd was quite small for the space and very mixed (old/young) and of course the punk mosh pit filled it out the rest of the room. There was a few kids with the liberty spikes and most had on some form of punk gear. I saw one boy there that I use to work with at Tower Records back in the late 80's early 90's who I had a mad crush on - too bad he was with a lady friend. I haven't listened to GBH in like 13 years and was surprised that I recognized 7 songs. They played my all time favorite "Diplomatic Immunity" and the Stooges "I Feel Alright" - it was a great show.
BTW support CBGBs which if you didn't know stands for Country Blue Grass Blues or so Hilly Kristal said in that movie PUNK: attitude . Punks Not Dead - Oi Oi Oi!
