elanamatic: Reverse Culture Shock
It is so strange to be back in the Western world, I can only imagine what it must be like to return home after a year or more abroad. We are suffering from major jet lag, just woke up from a heavy duty nap. We seem to cave every afternoon... I hope we adjust soon.
I feel out of practice here. I forget how to speak in full sentences, I was so used to using broken English to communicate with locals and other foreigners alike. I miss practicing the two thai phrases I know. I feel restricted wearing so much clothing. I was out earlier today without any makeup etc... someone thought I was only 24 and too young to be just married.
Things I enjoy about being home:
- hot showers
- my bed
- knowing how to use the phone
- not having safari breath! (and being able to brush my teeth with tap water)
I've been a bit bummed out about being back. Haven't really been in touch with anyone. I'll do my best to start phoning around tomorrow. Yesterday was tough. I found out that my two fingers are likely broken. They are still incredibly swollen and very stiff. I need to see a hand specialist but because of SARS I can't get an appt. for another two weeks. I hate feeling useless and dependent and only hope that the damage isn't permanent. My doctor said that surgery is a possibility. This is not good, man. It's my right hand, my livelihood. I can't write or tie my shoes or cut my food. I feel like an old fool. grrr. Oh well, at least I can type!
Right, feeling tired and incoherent but we are off to party. ciao.
