Last night while flipping channels, I caught the beginning of a Gwen/No Doubt Spotlight on MM last night and was reminded of how much I used to really like No Doubt back when their Tragic Kingdom album was released. I felt totally guilty for bashing her current weirdness at lunch.
After all, I was a complete sucker for I Am Just A Girl and Spiderweb back in university. (This might have something to do with the fact that J liked it too. And I of course had a massive crush on him. But that never went anywhere healthy so I digress.) And they have had some incredible videos and undeniably catchy pop tunes over the years.
Gwen's new solo album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby (released yesterday) was all over the Internet last week, but I didn't bother to check it out because I just didn't think I would like it.
Out of curiousity, I went to look at her website today and was struck by this image.
The layout and content strongly resembles this picture that I saw in an ad last month in Juxtapoz.
I was instantly turned on by the combination of ancient Japanese art meets street graffiti in Yumiko's artwork. The highly sexualized imagery feels somehow empowering... Also the flowers are pretty. I want one of her pieces for my bedroom.
SO, does this mean I am both as cool and as fucked up as Gwen Stefani? Or that I should buy her new album? (Unlikely as the reviews were less then stellar). Or maybe it means I should put on my old No Doubt albums, wear my hair in braids, put on a baby tee and dance like a fool in the kitchen.
PS. Raine called me last night to tell me she had made Sweet Potato Fries. RAWK!
