Practically everyone here is a self-confessed geek, (with the exception of perhaps Nora, who is of course a superstar) and I have been trying to determine where I fit in. I was discussing this last night, with Emily, Becky, Paul et al chez Pony.
See, since the reclaiming of the word geek in the 90s, I have wondered if I am more of nerd? I obsess about things. I have a serious addiction to the Internet. I read until my eyes bleed. I loved being in school and get off on learning (if I am interested in the topic). I was seriously into IRC in university. I am curious about the occult, and have an affinity for gothic/fringe stylings. I used to be compulsive about movies and music knowledge (unfortunately, years of thc abuse and pop culture cramming have erradicated certain necessary recall synapses.) BUT, I do have social skills despite my (shrinking) insecurities.
At the end of the day, I guess I don't fit neatly into any one category and I don't really care to. I hate labels. Besides, only a real loser would try to out-geek other nerds by justifying their geek/nerd tendencies. Am I right?
In the meantime, I will continute to thrive in my geek/nerd world.
My favourite part of the discussion was when Emily said "My mom always said they (nerds) make the best husbands." And I, unblinking said, "Mine too."
We both started laughing and confessed that our dads were clearly nerds. My mom always said that to me when I wasn't interested in some dork with a crush...
Fortunately, the dude was out of the room when we had this conversation, so let's just keep it between you, me and the interweb.
PS. It was so nice to meet my first happyrobots, Honky Cracker and Becky!
PPS Pony wants to kidnap you and keep you north of the border.
