elanamatic: lootbaggity
Many of my more recent birthday celebrations ended typical elanamatic styles - inebriated, wearing a huge grin and randomnly hugging anyone with arms reach and exclaiming my usual drunken "I love you guys!" sappiness.
Last year, I saw Bob Dylan at The Phoenix with my bro Les and the dude. That was pretty cool.
The rest of my teens and twenties are mostly indistinguishable. Lots of drinks, birthday cake with the family, a surprise party my parents threw for my 17th (I had slept over at a friend's and showed up wearing a terrible hangover and my tattered pajamas, all caught on videotape of course!)
Growing up, parents were really into the kiddie parties. They would show movies on projectors, make themed birthday cakes etc.. One of my earliest birthday memories was when I was in either kindergarten or nursery school. I don't remember any of the activities, but I remember my parents making a big fuss about the lootbags. I wasn't allowed to know what we were giving away until the end of the party.
As kids were leaving, my parents fetched a large cardboard box and as other parents came by to claim their kids, my mom and dad handed each kid a clear plastic bag, inside there were two goldfish! This was a BIG DEAL. The only pet I was ever allowed to have were goldfish. We named them sparkle and farkle, they didn't last long. Word about how my folks gave out goldfish at the party however, went on for years. I think was known as the girl who gave out goldfish at her birthday party for a long time.
