This post isn't going to be about my Cape Cod vacation. Not about how cool the Cape is. How wonderful the weather was or about how we were cracking open beers at noon everyday and just chillaxing (thanks to my brother's wife's family for this word). This post is mostly about how I brought along the book "Twilight", finished it on day one of vacation and then spent the next days wandering around adorable Chatham, MA with Ella trying to find the second book at a book store only to find out it was sold out all over the place. I had to wait until I got back to CT to get it as Barnes and Nobles has piles of them but alas, cute towns on the Cape don't have Barnes and Nobles.
I'm mostly obsessed with these young adult vampire books because the story of the author is so damn interesting: Mormon housewife of three children writes vampire story five years ago, gets $750k book deal (all the while hoping for just $10k to pay off her mini-van), gets movie deal and gets thousands of screaming fans tearing their eyes out at her book readings. The fourth book comes out next week at midnight release parties a la Harry Potter and I keep asking myself: what the hell is the formula for this? I'm sure a lot has to do with publishing. In an interview with the author she mentions that the title wasn't her choice - it was changed by her editor and you have to wonder if the book would've done as well with a different title. If you go on Amazon you'll see dozens of other young adult vampire books that have been around for years and you wonder why those didn't get launched into stardom (I'm sure those poor authors are wondering the same thing). Part of it is the packaging of the book - the covers are gorgeous (I think so, anyway). The stories are compelling and the characters are interesting. There's very much a Romeo and Juliet theme to the story - Bella Swan is the human who is in love with Edward the vampire. He's in love with her but he also wants her blood - forbidden teenage love is awesome! The dialogue is cheesy at times - there's lots of smoldering "I can't live without you - turn me into a vampire too!" moments. I have a feeling that in future books there's going to be a mob with torches - who doesn't love that? At any rate, I've joined the ranks of the obsessed. I'll probably go see the movie in December. Who knows how many more books she'll come out with. She has an adult book out about some sort of alien parasites invading human bodies called "The Host". She evidently is working on a sister book of sorts to "Twilight", a book from Edward's (vampire) point of view. She's unstoppable! And annoying! But here I am, shoving my family out of the house just so I can finish reading the second book and get sucked in (ha ha, no pun intended) even further! Help me!
