Is it disturbing that my kid’s favorite songs are “Pork and Beans”, “Werewolves of London” and Pink’s “So What?”.
Anywho, the holidays are over, time for a diet detox and getting back into the swing of things. Not having a schedule for a week an a half with an almost-four-year old is painful. I was happy to drop her off at school today and head to work (where I am not doing work. Ha!). Although at about the three hour mark I start missing her koo-koo saying like “If we were all superheros, we would wear capes and we could just fly everywhere! I'll wear a blue cape. How about you?” and on and on.
Is it just me or do toys really really suck these days? I go into the Target toy section and my eyes begin to bleed from all the crapness. One item Ella got for the holidays from my aunt (at my suggestion) is Moon Sand because she has been begging for me to get it. And yes, it does easily mold into shapes. And no, it doesn’t dry out. But it makes such a horrific mess that it defies the laws of nature. The colors get all mixed up and it ends up looking like kitty litter and it gets all over everything! We’ve played with it for two weeks and I’m ready to toss it.
Ella did get some great items from Santa and friends and family. Books, of course, because I’m a nerd that way - “A Boy and His Bunny” and “A Bear and His Boy” to go along with “A Girl and Her Gator”. She also got the “Daring Book for Girls” which I love if only because it gives the real rules for hopscotch. The travel-sized Sleep Sheep– it’s a little sheep that plays a variety of soothing sounds – babbling brook, rain, ocean and ocean with whale sounds. I think the whale sounds are freaky but Ella loves them. She also got a mini-hockey set which we’ve been playing with in the basement (huge hit) and the Color Wonder Glow Board that makes cool glowing pictures and we use it every night before bed. Mariposa Barbie and the Mariposa movie were also huge hits and she also got a variety of Schleich animals (a squirrel! A hedgehog!), our family’s all-time favorite toy – she has almost 35 of these animals – they travel well and are great restaurant/car ride play items. Finally, Ella got Hungry Hungry Hippos which is still fun after all these years. It’s made a bit more cheaply than days of yore – the marbles are plastic and not real marble material but on the upside, they’ve named each hippo (Happy, Henry, Homer and Harry – I think).
Some favorite gifts I gave this year: subscriptions to Netflix, Ben & Jerry’s pint coupons (to be used at grocery stores), and Mario Kart (for Craig and it’s so fun!).
So – Happy 2009!
