Did you know that Lake Champlain has a Loch Ness type monster named Champ? Well, it does. And just like Nessie, it has its naysayers and its fans. I saw it one summer. I did! My family would spend some time every summer at a cabin my Mom’s family owned. We’d go out on the boat to “fish”. (We threw back whatever we caught, we weren’t fishing for food but fishing for fun. And To Build Character.)
One afternoon we were “fishing”. I was about 12 and I was up at the front of the boat (it was a smallesh motor boat. Please don’t ask for specifics). Out of the corner of my eye I saw this thing wriggling up from the depths of slimy Lake Champlain. It was huge – twelve feet? A hundred feet? Neon green! Eel-like! With shimmery scales! With fins! Argh! I backed away from the side of the boat - it completely took my breath away and it’s a feeling I can remember as if it was yesterday. I dropped my fishing pole as it receded into the dark pockets of the lake. I must’ve been as white as a sheet because I didn’t get in trouble for almost losing the fishing pole and my Dad totally believed me.
“I think Lisa just saw Champ!”
