Nutshell Kingdom: starved for booze
2002
When I arrived in Lexington, VA last year, there were three bars within walking distance. One of them, Traveller's, was a small, basement-y affair which was never crowded or too loud. It closed quickly.
And then there were two. The Palms and B.J.'s Oasis (or the Dirty O)(funny, I know). Both of these bars were crowded and loud, but at least you could pick which one you could stand on a given night. The Palms was very small and very crowded, but not as scary as the O. The O was huge, had really bizarre DJs and karaoke nights, and attracted a large, somewhat rougher clientele. Actually, the O was a dive. But it was our dive.
Last nite, I found out (I was at the Palms) that the O had closed. It was a little upsetting. I really don't have any affection for the O, but I do have many good memories. Where will all the law students go to sing crappy contemporary country songs to their disinterested peers? Where wil they bump and grind to last years big beat hit single remixes? Nowhere. We now have one bar (besides Applebee's and Ruby Tuesday's--but no one goes there), and one bar-- even if it were a better bar-- would not be enough.
