Nutshell Kingdom: Desert Island Person
2003
I have been thinking of this 'desert island' phenomenon: which CDs would you bring, which household items, which books, etc. The question everyone should be battling with is, which people? Or which person? Who would you bring with you if stuck on a desert island? Everyone's first response is their best friend or lover. I think this is universal. But then you get that nagging selfish feeling, like o my god, could I really condemn the one that I love best to a life of isolation and exile just to satisfy my own isolation? I think that you almost have to answer no, unless you are enough of an egomaniac to really believe that your presence alone is enough to give them a good life cut off from all soceity.
Personally, I would pick a stranger. A female stranger. Sure, that could go miserably wrong. You could ahte each other within days. However, I cling to my naive belief that propinquity will rule the day. The two strangers would bond over shared trials and tribulations, not to mention space. Hell on earthg could conceivably become even more hellish, but I'd lay odds that by the end of the 'stranding,' the two trapped people would learn each other from scratch, grow to rely on the other, and form a soulmate-type bond based on circumstance alone. And that is even better than the selfish condemnation of an old friend to a desert island out of mere anxiety over loneliness. At least a stranger cannot grow to resent you for your choice.
So.... who would you pick?
