Nutshell Kingdom: Karaoke Night
2006
Friday at work and I am hung. Over. Something behind my left eyebrow throbs. My sinuses and lungs are filled with some sort of sticky, starchy albumen that rolls its gooey mass from one side of my body to the other, depending on my position. And my neck...how did I hurt my neck?
I accidentally wandered into a karaoke night last night at The Galaxy Hut. What a weird scene; it's like watching someone from behind their bathroom mirror, wrapped in a towel and singing into a hairbrush. Stereotypes abound: there were nerds (yes, real nerds!) singing 'Tom Sawyer' and 'Running on Ice;' there were big-haired beauty queens singing Mary Chapin Carpenter; there were 'Ghost World' irony chicks singing Violent Femmes ('Add It Up' - not 'Blister'). The shocking thing was how much fun it was.
Notice the past tense; karaoke is a perfect complement to alcohol - they're both so much fun at the time and often a blurry regret the next day. Did I really sing along to 'More Than a Feeling'? Yes.
Sucker.
