Job Detail:
He/she will also be able to see the big picture as well as pay attention to detail, and be willing to work hands-on at any task required, to ensure success.
This morning I woke up at 11:30 am. I am not sure how it happened. Because like eager job-hunters we went to bed at midnight in anticipation of an early morning. And we had napped earlier in the day. Maybe Chris and I caught the SARSor something else going around. But who sleeps 11.5 hours without having a hangover or an illness?
I decided that there would be no making out all day. Not that you need to hear about me making out. Or maybe you do. Certainly my mom does not need to hear about this. It is just that there needed to be less kissing and more practical thinking. We needed to focus. We were going to be disciplined about finding jobs.
I emailed Kate to confess my guilt about sleeping in. She wrote back about the problem of self-discipline. The absurdity of following self-styled rules:
"Smarten up, Kate!" I say to myself, and then have a problem with my own authority.
This whole job search is - well - a bit distasteful. It's not the job I fear, but the vast, anonymous process of application.
And we have both always heard about jobs through word of mouth. Is any company that posts a job online going to read our CV's if they don't know us? At the CBC people seemed to shift from department to department with little outside blood.
We will have to take that risk.
Today was going to be a day of list-making and task-completion.
We even went online and read CV tips and job postings. And maybe it was because of the ban on smooching, but we started to come to some conclusions and by 4 pm our productivity led to a real breakthrough:
In order to get a job, you have to apply for one. And in order to find out about a potential job, you have to leave your house.
So we went across the street and had limonata in the last rays of sunshine and talked to our underemployed friends about what we could do for money.
"I hear there is this lab where they pay you to try experimental drugs. But, like, 95 per cent of the time it is placebo."
"I have skills. I helped my Dad build a deck last summer."
Then we ran into Albert who invited us to a shmoozefest for HotDocs. That would entail leaving the house, but at least the drinks are free.
