Pony: oh what a relief it is?
11.29.2005
It appears that we are going to have another federal election this January. Like a tablet of antacid in a murky glass of water, Parliament has finally been dissolved.
I watched the recap of the non-confidence vote on the news last night. The only remotely emotional moment came when the MP's who would be bowing out next election stood up to massive applause. Seeing a politician at the end of his/her career puts it in a bit of perspective, don't it? You know, the concept of public service and all those ideals that go into the choice to enter politics.
The rest of the news was a bit nerdy, even for me. The canned speeches and blustery posturing: The government didn't fall - we simply sheathed our swords. Didn't hear a peep out of the usually insufferable Anne Mclellan (she may very well be a nice person, but she is so squawky and shrill on the public stage). It would have been nice to see a woman in the sea of white male faces in jackets and ties.
Then Kiff turned to me and made Stephen Harper fish lips and tried to kiss me and totally interrupted the montage in my head.
I was reminiscing all "slow-mo vaseline-on-lense style" on highlights of this short-lived gov't. The last, most suspenseful non-confidence vote. Jack Layton hitting his stride. Stock footage of the Gomery report going through the printer as Chretien takes golf balls out of his suitcase. Bono vowing to kick Martin's ass over 3rd world debt relief. Svend Robinson telling us that he is a "little bit" bi-polar. Belinda Stronach crossing the floor to the Liberals and Anne Mclellan muddying the progressive-woman message with her "she has great shoes" comment. Belinda standing on a speaker and singing Karaoke Material Girl the night the non-confidence vote failed. Peter Mckay at his family potato farm waxing about loyalty....Ah, those were the days.
Tons of volunteer hours and donations are going to pour in for what undoubtedly will be the same/similar configuration of parties. I hope Olivia gets her seat this time.
