Pony: burrito blues
5.16.2006
We had a big burrito party on friday and a whole buncho folks got food poisoning, starting Saturday night. I was one of the few who did not get sick, even though i ate a couple of diff kinds. People had fevers, barfing, cramping - some are still sick today.
I was feeling kinda guilty as one of the few lucky ones who escaped the wrath of the mexican-style snack food. So I did some research, and came up with the following most likely culprits (with some guidelines from Abi):
Salmonella.
*Can appear through unclean preparation, undercooked meats, improper storage - you name it.
Symptoms: It normally takes 12 to 48 hours for symptoms to develop. Symptoms may include fever, diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Staphlococcus aureus
Foods that require considerable handling during preparation and that are kept at slightly elevated temperatures after preparation are frequently involved in staphylococcal food poisoning.
Symptoms: The most common symptoms are nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and prostration within 1-7 hrs of ingestion. Recovery generally takes two days. It is not unusual for complete recovery to take three days and sometimes longer.
It is a horrible thing for all these people who got sick, but the one good part of all of it? I get to hear the phrase "stool culture" several times this week. I don't know why, but i just find that term funny.
