Pony: 19a
8.23.2006
I was talking to a friend of mine a couple of months ago about her boyfriend's dull taste in cuisine. He likes meat and starch, she said. Nothing ethnic except, maybe, 19a.
A few years ago, I ran into an old acquaintance just outside of Kensington market. She was trying to support herself through acting and the odd catering gig. "I don't know how i do it." She said."I am living off falafel and 19a."
The other day, I was going to pick up vietnamese food and a third friend said: "You know what I am craving? 19a. Can you pick me up their version of 19a?"
My first foray into Vietnamese food was also 19a at Pho Hung (when it was a block up Spadina). If I skipped school to see a movie, I would often end up there for lunch. Seemingly frozen at $4.95, you still get quite a bang for the buck: rice noodles, shredded daikon and carrot and bean sprouts, grilled pieces of chickn, and a spring roll and sweet vinagery dressing.
I am not sure how it ended up in our collective lexicon, but there you go. 19a. (These days, however I order #1).
