Pony: Even a little
5.30.2001

That particular Mr. Submarine breaks my heart.
When Adam was doing his play at the Factory, he used to go to the Mr. Sub at the corner of Queen and Bathurst (Toronto) to grab meals in a hurry (veggie sub, no onions or olives).
One day in January, he was late for rehearsal and went to grab his regular sub. The owner seemed extra sad that day. Adam placed his order and said something to the effect of "It's not that bad, is it?"
The man quietly answered, "Yes, yes it is." His only child (a son) who was 18 years old had borrowed the family car a few nights before and had collided with a taxi cab on an icy road and died. That night it had taken the father 45 minutes to find the car keys which were always on a peg by the door.
"It was a sign." He said, crying and filling the Sub with onions olives. "I never should have found those keys."
Hundreds of people came to the boy's funeral. "But thousands of people can not change how I feel, even a little."
