Pony: Moulin Rouge
6.6.2001
I rather liked Moulin Rouge. It was Rock Opera in its most excellent incarnation. It was the basic story structure stripped down to the barest opera bones (with the classic devices--the penniless troubador and the evil royal competing for the love of the dying courtesan with the motley crew of clowns and jesters).
Everything that hung off of this simple story structure was unapologetically over-the-top and elaborate. My God, the costumes! The hilarious pop-romantique medleys! The fun that everyone seemed to be having! I think I loved it.
