Pony: Farmer's Market
6.5.2007
A new farmer's market opened up at the local park.
I love me a farmer's market.
For a few years I have been going to the very popular Dufferin Grove Organic Market on Thursdays. It is a huge throng of families and new babies and apple-cheeked 20-somethings on vintage bicycles and a dreadlocked guitarist playing eerily repetitive blues rifs. It feels like a movie set. It can be a bit overwhelming, actually - my friend Jen freaked out when we went there with our strollers. "Eesh. It's like everyone drank the koolaid." You have to be in the mood.
Trinity Bellwoods is hosting a farmer's market every Tuesday from 3-7pm on the Dundas-Shaw corner of the park, and today was the launch. It was an unseasonably cold and windy day, but it stayed dry and a trio of string instruments injected a dose of romance into the blustery day (babies love baroque, btw).
I noticed a few familiar vendors from roncesvalles and kensington market as well as some tables boasting local produce. I bought three different types of sheep's milk cheese from one lovely vendor and some greens from another. The crowd was small for the opening ceremonies at 3pm, but I expect it will get busier as the summer progresses. Worth checking out, even if it is about a one-stop shop for your favourite west-end treats. And, yes, a good place to bring your baby.
