elanamatic: Tackling Tempeh
Perhaps it's the early Fall temperatures, or the time I spent in the presence of recently veganized Kat at a cottage this weekend, but last night I decided to tackle the brick of Tempeh that has been sitting in my fridge for the past month or so.
I've tried Tempeh in the past at veg restaurants and liked it but I was unsure how to use it. I googled some recipes and most suggest using it for chili or crumbling it to make faux sausages or baking/grilling it. I couldn't decide. I wanted something low maintenance and quick. I finally decided on using it to make a broccoli stir fry. I wasn't sure how keen I'd be on the tempeh but I happen to looooooove broccoli.
Basically it's just how you would make a normal stir fry but instead of using tofu/other protein, toss in some tempeh. (It's best to pre-marinate it in soy sauce etc..)
It turned out pretty decent.. Although for some reason, I wasn't feeling the tempeh. It had too rich a flavour for me. It's very nutty and fermented tasting. The dude on the other hand loved it and was laughing because for once he loved one of my healthy food adventures and I wasn't digging it...
BUT I had the leftovers for lunch today, and it was delish.
Bottom line, tempeh can be tempting. Try it.
