when i saw rich and rachel a week and a half ago they said i absolutely must start playing scrabulous on facebook. and because it's the only thing i can figure out on facebook and because it's so addictive, here i am playing scrabulous. how the maker's of scrabble have even let it go this far, i don't know but i do know i love it. i've been getting my ass handed to me by rich, rachel and dog years jason. my scores always look like a soccer game and their scores look like RBIs. seriously. but it's so fun. you should totally join in.
so, we close on our new house tomorrow. supposedly. who knew buying a house was so fickle even once you get past the negotiation of the price? our last house was a cinch because it was new and there wasn't a lot to deal with. this house we've had everything go wrong and won't believe it's ours until we have those keys in our hands. moving this time has been a customer service nightmare from the bank mortgage officers to getting services turned on and off. i thought i was being so sassy by calling four weeks ahead to have our internet, phone and tv turned off but they turned it off three weeks early. we had to make honestly 20 phones calls to get the damn stuff turned back on. then i submitted a mail forward request online and it also started immediately instead of the date i requested. luckily, that was an effort in efficiency as i just called the local post office, talked to the post master and got everything back on track. with any luck, we'll be moving on friday!
i also made the growns up decision to get a job, and not just the part-time job i had at a gym three nights a week and weekends which was killing me because it was WAY past my bedtime and for so little money. so i started looking for a real part-time day job and it was disparaging. i sent out 15 resumes and only got three phone calls back. the times must be a-changin' because in several instances, i made follow up calls to HR departments and still didn't hear back. even a kindly "thanks but no thanks" would've sufficed. i must be completely unemployable at this point. in about half the cases, i sent out resumes detailing my break in employment as a time to be a stay-at-home parent. in the other half, i didn't mention the break and figured i would tell them when i interviewed. two of the calls were from the resumes with the stay-at-home parent role mentioned. one of the calls was from the resume with the break not explained. go figure. so i landed a nice job with nice pay and flexible hours. ella will be starting a preschool and i'm anxious and nervous about it. she starts two days before i start my job and i figure i will just sit in my car the whole five hours she's at school and cry.
if you're looking for a new industry to become involved in, here's my tip: cardboard moving boxes. they are so. freakin'. expensive. luckily i saved a lot from last time. but when i went to home depot to get a few extra they were $3 a piece for the large, $2 for the smaller. what the? boxes? empty boxes? i then remembered that last year when i bought boxes i spent like 100 bucks or something. crazy. so get yourself a box making company, make some boxes and sell 'em. you'll be a zillionaire. i plan on offering mine on craigslist or freecycle for $1 each just to make some money back. (that being said, email me if you live in new england and need boxes.)
update: just after i posted this entry, my internet went out. hm. then i looked at my phone and saw the tell-tale "no line" message. hm. then i turned on the tv and no reception. are you kidding? i called the communications company yesterday to have stuff turned off next wednesday and once again they turned it off too early! luckily i looked outside and saw the truck and ran out to it barefoot, in the rain to say "hello! it's not supposed to be turned off. once again." oy vey.
