Nutshell Kingdom: Animal Dreams
2003
So, I did not get my sex dream last night. Will it ever happen again? I just don't know.
However, I do dream an awful lot about animals. Mostly nightmares. My first recalled nightmare was being bit on the hand by a poisonous snake and having my parents react by taking me out for fast food. Just last week, I had a strange Biblical dream involving seven perfectly coiled rattlesnakes.
About twenty years ago, I had a dream about a giant fish that turned into a giant man and chased me all the way to another pond, where he became a fish again. I still remember it like it was yesterday.
In college, I often dreamed of a murderous black kitten whose eyes glowed with celestial evil when it was about to attack. In these dreams, I was the chosen one whose sole function was to battle and stop this evil kitty. I actually fought the kitten in my dreams, beating it to death in settings as varied as shopping malls, gas stations and the quad at my old university.
Another kitten nightmare happened when my father accidentally dropped one down an open well while trying to rescue it. I actually cried out in my sleep when the kitten fell and could not forgive my father for days.
To close, had a dream about a giant, archetypal grizzly bear almost every night on the drive home to North Carolina from Alaska. He was hounding me across a continent, Robert Johnson-like. These dreams seemed so symbolic, yet so real, that occasionally I would get jumpy in places like the streets of Chicago, half expecting that bear to amble around the corner and maul my very soul.
