TORONTO- A man from Yemen detained in Toronto on the day of the terrorist attacks in the United States is facing another delay in his extradition case.
Nageeb Abdul Jabar Mohamed Al-Hadi was stopped at Pearson International Airport on September 11 when customs officials found three different passports and two airline uniforms in his luggage. He was en route from Frankfurt, Germany, to Chicago when the plane was diverted to Toronto.
He has been charged by Canadian authorities on behalf of the U.S. with fraudulent use of a U.S. visa and uttering a false statement to use and apply for an American passport.
U.S. officials want to extradite him, but Al-Hadi's newly-appointed lawyer was not able to make it to the court proceedings.
Dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit, Al-Hadi was visibly upset and spoke out several times during the proceedings. He used an interpreter to say he was innocent and he said he was being held in solitary confinement, unable to speak with his family.
"I'm not like those people that you think of," he told the court. "I want to explain my situation from beginning to the end now."
He was crying as guards led him out of the court.
An official from Yemen's embassy was also present in the courtroom. Abdulla Al-Montaser said Al-Hadi will face charges in Yemen relating to his passport.
